NBA Off-Season

Southeast Division Mock Off-Season

What will the offseason look like?

This article brings us from draft night to the opening night rosters for the following 2020-21 regular season including the draft, every free agent signing, and every trade that I see coming. The final rosters do not include the two-way contracts as those are so unrealistic to even predict, but the final 15-man rosters are provided.

The biggest thing to remember is I’m using a $109.14 million salary cap and $139 million luxury tax threshold which assumes a cap smoothing is agreed to. I took into account where each team is and where they will be looking to improve based on their direction this offseason.

This isn’t to just make the best team possible for all 30 teams or even what I think each team SHOULD do this offseason. This is more so what I expect to see each team do. I hope you enjoy the 2020 offseason.

Sam Merrill (59th)

Other moves:
None

Summary:
The Hawks draft a 3-and-D guard that could play off of Trae Young in Haliburton in the NBA Draft. In free agency, they add pieces that provide the kind of depth they could use. Jerami Grant provides a lot of flexible line-up options in a John Collins/Clint Capela/Jerami Grant front-court rotation. Joe Harris helps spread the floor while also holding his own on D while Kris Dunn provides the defensive talent that the Hawks second unit could really use. The Hawks end up not giving up much, but adding a ton to a roster that has breakout potential in 2020-21.

Other moves:
Charlotte Hornets waive Nicolas Batum

Summary:
The Hornets end up not using any of their cap space on free agents and instead opt to add rookie contracts, draft picks and young talent. James Wiseman provides a solid punch and excitement to a Hornets core that needs a go-to type of guy with the hopes that Wiseman develops to that guy. Tyrese Maxey provides a toughness to their front-court and fits nicely with Graham. Adding Paschall for Rozier is a sneaky good move even coming at the cost of adding Wiggins.

Trades they made:
Miami Heat trade KZ Okpala to the Chicago Bulls for Ryan Arcidiacono
Miami Heat trade Kelly Olynyk and 20th Overall Draft Pick for LaMarcus Aldridge

Who they drafted:
None

Other moves:
None

Summary:
Miami gets even better by adding LaMarcus Aldridge without giving up a ton and finds a way to leave open the possibility of Giannis in 2021 free agency by not giving out any long-term deals. Aldridge isn’t an ideal fit, but provides more talent than anything else Miami could get on a one year deal. The veterans Miami adds in free agency are good depth veterans and bringing back Jae Crowder is important as he seems to have been a good fit there.

Orlando Magic

Who they drafted:
Saddiq Bey (15th)
Cassius Winston (45th)

Other moves:

Summary:
Orlando starts a rebuild without go full blown Process. Jarrett Culver seems like the type of project they like to work with a could develop nicely next to Fultz. Adding a steady hand veteran to keep the team composed is helpful with Goran Dragic staying in Florida, but moving to Orlando. Saddiq Bey’s skill set balances the roster well and Josh Okogie is a gritty player on the wing. They keep open some flexibility to go either way at the trade deadline by either building an offer for an upgrade using James Johnson’s expiring deal or continuing with the tear down.

Washington Wizards trade Isaac Bonga and 37th Overall Draft Pick to the Portland Trail Blazers for 46th Overall Draft Pick, 2022 Portland Trail Blazers Second Round Draft Pick and Cash

Who they drafted:
Cole Anthony (14th)
Leandro Balmaro (26th)

Other moves:
None

Summary:
Tristan Thompson could be rejuvinated in a winning environment and while it may be a bit of an overpay, they only sign him for one year. Retaining Davis Bertans keeps them competitive for a lower playoff seed and Cole Anthony provides fresh legs at point guard to allow John Wall to limit his minutes. Overall the Wizards are in a tough spot where they don’t want to rebuild, but don’t quite have the assets to make an all in trade that would be worth it.
