My wish for the Warriors this offseason: package the high pick to land a star player. Holiday, Beal, Oladipo or any legit star. Do overpay if necessary.
The current core don’t have enough help to be a legit contender. Curry, Klay and Green can’t carry this collection of bad role players. They need to be more top heavy to be able to overcome their supporting casts.
Which depth pieces make sense via trade?
This is my current favorite fake trade.Wiggins + 2020 first round pick + lightly protected 2021 first round pick for Holiday + 2020 first round pick
Do you think ownership is going to pay a lot this off-season?
I believe Lacob and friends are willing to pay the heavy price to make the team a real contender. They seem genuinely committed to winning. And they seem to understand that the championship window is going to close sooner than later.
“With their ages, we’re in a certain window of opportunity and we’d certainly like to take advantage of that window of opportunity. So that was our plan. And still, until further notice, is our plan for next year and the next few years. However, a lot of things could change and we’re going to have to adjust just like every other team has to adjust to whatever the new world is in the NBA.”

Who makes the most sense to target with the Tax MLE and Iguodala TPE?
This is just a quick answer. I have not put much effort into this.
Tax MLE: Jae Crowder
TPE: Kelly Oubre (plus incentives) or Thad Young (no incentives)
I like Tony Snell too because it makes a follow up Wiggins trade easier
God please don’t let Warriors use TPE for Snell. Might as well let it burn and save lots of money.
Snell actually is making 1.7 3-pointers a game at 40% 3P% and ranks 5th among SF’s in real defensive plus/minus
Don’t think the Warriors really need him. Especially with his big salary next season. The Warriors need more than just a simple 3-and-D wing. This team needs more scoring juice.
Young don’t bring any scoring juice. But I believe he is a better option than Snell. Young seems like a smart player. He should fit better with the team than Snell.
I also like Young’s contract more than Snell’s
I think Snell is a nice piece for the Warriors. They could use the depth. I think it would be quite smart for them to use rights to a pick swap in 2021 with a bad team to bring back some depth.
I wouldn’t do anything crazy just yet. Hold on to your assets and feel out the beginning of the season. Use your pick to draft a Okongwu or a Wiseman. I’d be willing to bet that they can’t keep up the small ball stuff forever given age and accumulation of minutes.
How do we have a healthy Warriors team ranking in their division versus the Clippers and Lakers?
I also think that Wiggins contract is pretty brutal and the Warriors may be better off trying to fix Wiggins than use him as a trade piece
How do the Warriors like big men in a Wiggins trade? The Horford’s/Love’s/Vucevic’s/etc
Also is any one with salary larger than the TPE worth taking on salary for the TPE to use as filler in a bigger deal?
Nah I don’t think there’s any realistic interesting trade target with salary larger than TPE.
The way the Warriors roster is constructed, I’m guessing they would rather have Wiggins over Love and Vucevic.
They might prefer Horford over Wiggins though. But it depends on what’s the price that they must pay.
The current Warriors core, if all healthy, I believe is worse than both Clippers and Lakers. They would be in the range for 4th to 6th best team in the West.
If the Warriors keep the pick, who is the best fit?
That’s a tough question. I have not watched enough clips of this year’s draft class. But there’s one thing that I’m very sure about.
Warriors won’t draft LaMelo.
I don’t think the Warriors would draft Edwards either. I actually think the best fits for them are Okongwu, Wiseman, and Avdija.
If Avdija can just knock down corner 3s and play make a little and defend at a solid level, I can see a lineup of Curry/Thompson/Wiggins/Avdija/Green being pretty versatile and impactful.
I don’t know, I could see the Warriors going for the most immediate talent regardless of fit
For the TPE is Rudy Gay a good fit?
Don’t think it’s a good idea to use the TPE for Gay. Gay is not a good defender.
Schroder is a good fit for TPE, IMO. Curry has nerve damage and they could opt to rest him more knowing that Schroder can run offense.
Schroder indeed would be a good addition
What could GSW give OKC though?
Top 15-20 protected future first? Schroder will be playing on an expiring next year right?
I believe Schroder will be an expiring @ ~15M
15.5 to be exact
How far in the future are we looking with this pick because that matters…
2021 protected pick
I think lottery-protected is doable. You might even convince me that top 20 is doable. Does GSW actually own next year’s pick?
Warriors own all of their future first round picks except for 2024 (to Memphis, Iguodala trads)
Wouldn’t trading the 2021 pick out the Warriors in an odd situation in terms of their flexibility of trading draft picks? If you trade 2021, you can’t trade 2022 or 2023 due to Stepien rule.
They have the Wolves first in 2021. That pick is top 3 protected. So long as the Wolves dont select in the top 3 of the 2021 draft, the Warriors can trade their 2021 pick and it wont impact their ability to move the 2022 pick in a future trade.
Well said jred. And I’m very sure Wolves won’t be a bottom 3 team next season.
So GSW doesn’t own their pick next year?
Just to be clear, I am asking about GSW’s own picks, not ones they have traded for.
What?
As I stated before. Warriors do own all of their future first round picks except 2024.
If needed they can trade away their own 2021 pick.
The Stepien Rule applies to any first round pick. So long as the Warriors make a first round selection with the Wolves first in 2021 they can trade their own and not suffer any repercussions regarding trade restrictions on future picks.
Ah, that clears things up, Jred. Thanks.
No problem . I was confused by that for a long time.
Yeah, you would think it would apply to just your own picks.
Schroder for 2021 Conditional Warriors 1st?
I could see it
Steph Curry needs rest
Also, assuming the cap stays the same and the rookie scale would as well, let’s say the Warriors get the 5th Overall Pick post-lottery
They could wait until their pick can be traded as salary, package it with Kevon Looney and/or the T’Wolves pick for $14+ Million in salary
Adding Schroder and whatever that gets you would be great for the Warriors
Schroder is a player that they currently dont have on their roster. I just dont see them taking on that much salary without sending Wiggins or the 2020 first back in the deal. Schroder would cost them about $30 million in luxury tax.
Schroder into TPE , Looney, Wiggins and asset(s) for Adams
What kind of asset bridges that gap
Minnesota first? Might be too much but plugging in Adam’s and Schroder is a big improvement. Could look for wing help with their first in 2020.
Yeah if their pick drops to Okoro range
I also like Rondae Hollis-Jefferson here for tax MLE
He is really good defensively
RHJ is a beast on the defensive end and KAT stretch capability really open up the options at the four.
Jred, we’re talking about Warriors absorbing RHJ via TPE. Towns is not a Warrior. (Yet)
Ah. . Got lost in the threads.
Vucevic, Oubre (into TPE) and 10 to the WarriorsWiggins and 5 (via Warriors post-lotto) to the Magic
Gordon and 16 to the Suns
That would be a bad business by the Warriors.
Vucevic might be the better player/contract right now. But Wiggins fits the Warriors playing style better than Vucevic.
Warriors got no place for a traditional big who’s not a special talent.
Which big men in 2020 free agency fit the mold they are looking for?
No one really. Warriors only need a defensive, active, rebounding center who plays hard.
In the previous post I mean an expensive big. So let me make it clear, Warriors got no place for an expensive big who’s not a special talent.
Aron Baynes, Marc Gasol and Dwight Howard are the realistic targets.
Paul Millsap, Tristan Thompson, Derrick Favors and Jerami Grant would fit well but they should be out of reach.
Marc Gasol chasing a second title feels right. Do they use the full tax MLE on a center or try to get one of these guys on a vet minimum?
Vet minimum would be the dream.
Are the Warriors going to continue to play an up tempo style in comparison to the rest of the NBA?Pace by year during finals appearances18/19: 101.73
17/18: 100.35
16/17: 100.37
15/16: 100.24
14/15: 99.28Their fastest pace over their championship run would be good for 10th in the NBA this season. This season they are actually playing at the 13th fastest pace, 101.04.With an aging core does a player like Vucevic fit what the next phase of Warriors basketball will look like? (edited)
As I stated before Vucevic doesn’t fit Warriors’ playing style.
The Warriors are such an interesting team to me this off-season
They have a large TPE, early pick, great 2021 pick in the T’Wolves 1st relative to the others out there (edited)
The trade market doesn’t have great fits at center or small forward though
I could see Oubre and 10 for the Warriors pick if it’s 4 or 5 post- lottery
Mostly because I see the Suns owner making a money saving move he can spin positively
That gives the Warriors some options with Wiggins, 10 and ‘21 Wolves 1st available
That’s indeed a very reasonable deal. Oubre + 10th for 4th or 5th pick
Or even maybe the 3rd pick
That’s the rumor. Death, do you think the Warriors are going to spend like that? I think it is probably the best single option available to the Suns if it is actually available.
It’s already well known that the Warriors as a franchise is doing okay during this pandemic (edited)
I believe they won’t make (or not make) moves just to save money.
I assume you’re referring to the Windhorst article from a couple days back? I don’t take from that article that money wasn’t an issue. I took from it that they have the capital and resources not to have to make any moves detrimental to the teams current construction. They don’t have to trade pieces off to survive. I still think cost will weigh on their decision making. 80% of their revenue is derived from Chase Arena according to that article. If they can’t get fans back in seats next season that is a huge loss, even for Lacob.June12 Forbes:
Warriors General Manager Bob Myers was non-committal on spending big when asked this week, saying “if something makes sense, I can only look at past history where Joe [Lacob] has always been receptive to spending if it helps us win. We’re in a very unique situation now. I have no idea what the future holds. But I do know we have an ownership group that’s aggressive and always seems to push the limits. Resources have always been a huge positive in our organization, but I don’t know what it’s going to look like.”I don’t think using the TPE or the Tax MLE or both is completely off the table but I don’t expect them to do one or both without cutting some salary in another place and I wouldn’t consider it happening as an absolute.
That’s what I’m saying. They won’t make (or not make) moves just to save money. Doesn’t mean they are going to use the TPE. They will keep the roster as is at worst.
If Golden State could use their TPE for a salary that makes it work cap wise.. What would the Warriors give for Myles Turner?
A future first at best. Turner simply doesn’t fit.
What is wrong with his fit? Can stretch the floor, defend the rim, relatively switchable.
I have Indiana as a sneaky team to model after what OKC and New Orleans did last off-season and sell off their vets for assets/picks
To save cap space?
Yeah
Think about how many assets they could get if they traded Oladipo, Turner, etc
Its true. And they could still remain a playoff team in the East. I don’t think they teat it down but moving Dipo seems likely to me at this point.
Turner makes a lot of sense as well.
Yeah Sabonis, Brogdon, etc. could still be a playoff team
I could see Indy even taking on good players on bad contracts to still have a competitive on the court product
Don’t think Turner is agile enough to play Warriors’ style defense. Lots of switching. (edited)
There’s no doubt that he’s a respectable shooter though. (edited)
So you would rather have say the 3rd-5th Overall Pick post-lottery than Turner?
They have used significantly less mobile bigs in the past to good success. Why is he different? Cost?
I like…
Pacers get:
Jarrett Culver
James Johnson
2020 Warriors 1st
2020 T’Wolves 1st
Warriors get:
Myles Turner
Timberwolves get:
Victor Oladipo
Via 2 trades:
Trade 1 – Johnson to the Warriors into Iguodala TPE, Culver/Wolves 1st to Indiana, Oladipo to the T’Wolves
Trade 2 – Johnson and Warriors 1st for Myles Turner
Thats tricky using that non-simultaneous trade! You’ve been studying your Larry Coon.
Success with less mobile bigs? Who?
I would rather Warriors keep the pick than trade it for Turner.
Bogut, Zaza, Speights. Not sure Looney is particularly more switchable that Turner.
I understand that. Its a valuable asset.
Looney is very switchable.
Zaza and Speights played zero crunch time minutes.
Yeah but significantly more so than Turner?
What about Bogut?
Bogut is more or less the same. He played minimum crunch time minutes.
Cousins one year with Warriors was a failed experiment. He got targeted all the time.
Warriors should only surrender valuable assets for players that can fit their crunch time scheme. Which is small-ball with Green playing center.
How viable is the death lineup at this point. Playing devils advocate, isn’t it shortsighted to think what worked in the past will continue to work in the future? Team is older. The league has adapted and as I pointed out earlier playing faster than the warriors ever did. Shouldn’t they add players to play in a manor that would better suit an older team? Last, how certa6are you that a 31 year old Green can continue to play at a high level on the defensive end in a small ball five role over an entire season?
I can see him being as good for the next 2 years. And he doesn’t need to do it for the whole season. Only for playoffs.
Warriors can play active, energy big during most regular season games. (edited)
Sure Warriors should think about acquiring fresher legs. But still, Turner is not the answer.
I would say the Warriors should not be naive and try to make the team great for a long run, like let’ say 10 year.
Just focus on the next 2 years. Make the team as good as possible. Surrender as many picks as necessary to make it happen. Do it while Curry, and Green are still great players. (edited)
Let’s say post-lotto Golden State is 5th
And do the discussed Oubre + 10 for 5 trade
Who is the best player Looney + 10 gets them?
Or 10 + Wiggins
Guys that have been discussed for #10 (that would work with Looneys salary) include Luke Kennard, Derrick White, and Lauri Markkanen. I’m not sure what you get with Wiggins slary attached.
Luke Kennard for 10 and Looney is interesting
Buddy Hield please.
